Earlier this year, there were rumours that Amazon was looking at creating a God of War TV show adaptation. Today, Variety has reported that Amazon has now ordered the development of the God of War TV show, and that Rafe Judkins will be the show runner. The God of War TV show will adapt the story from the 2018 game, so we won’t see Kratos’ rise against the Greek Pantheon.
“’God of War’ is a compelling, character-driven franchise that we believe will captivate our global customers as much with its expansive and immersive worlds as its rich storytelling,” Vernon Sanders, head of global television at Amazon Studios, said. “We are honored to share in the adventure of exploring the God of War mythology in such a momentous way with Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, and Santa Monica Studio.”
Rafe Judkins has been working on Amazon’s The Wheel of Time adaptation, and previously worked the Uncharted movie, Agents of SHIELD, and Hemlock Grove. Also tied to the God of War show are writers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby. They have some hits under their belts including Children of Men, Iron Man, and The Expanse. Cory Balrog is also going to be tied to project as an executive producer.
While it was known a God of War show would be coming to Amazon, no other details were given. Sony has been pushing its gaming franchises to movie and TV screens. The Horizon franchise will be heading to Netflix, and a Gran Turismo show is also in the works. They join The Last of Us, which will be on HBO, Twisted Metal on Peacock, and the recent hit movie based on the Uncharted series. There’s also a Ghost of Tsushima movie on the way and Sony’s PlayStation Productions arm are no doubt looking at many other games.
