What We Played #584 – Midnight Suns & Nobody Saves The World

To kick things off for 2023 and the first What We Played of the year, I’ve jumped back into Halo Infinite and enjoyed the much speedier feeling progression that they added late last year. That’s not all though, as I’ve made a start on Marvel’s Midnight Suns, which is an interesting twist on turn-based tactics so far, and picked up Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order again – not from PS+ but from the copy I’ve had in my pile of shame for ages and ages. This trifecta should see me through January, I’m sure!

Let’s go in alphabetical order this week, starting with Aran, who’s been playing Nobody Saves The World – “I’ve tackled most of the dungeons now and am approaching the final leg, but I’m holding off completing quests so I can unlock all the forms. I really recommend the game because of its steady progress and how it offers lots of different ways to build your characters.”

It’s just a hop past B, a skip past C and we jump onto D to find Dom. He’s been playing Fire Emblem Engage for our preview, and enjoying the opening few hours of the game, mixing that with Gotham Knight, which he’s also enjoying (despite the Batcycle), and some regular bouts of Overwatch 2 and Monster Hunter Rise.

Next up is Gamoc, who’s been playing Cyberpunk 2077 after picking it up in the sales. He’s also been playing Beat Saber, where it took him just four tries to beat the 8.5 minute track Freebird on hard difficulty. And then there was Dwarf Fortress, where “one dwarf went crazy because he couldn’t find any silk and my mayor is apparently unhappy that the bedroom I assigned him is too nice. We are officially a mountain home now though, which is nice.”

Skipping ahead in the alphabet, we’ve got quite an M and N cluster, starting with Miguel, who got all tactical and RPG-y this week, mixing Dragon Quest Treasures, Marvel’s Midnight Suns and Tactics Ogre Reborn for his own gaming trifecta.

Then it’s Nic B, who played [redacted], but does at least let us know that it’s cute and he’s enjoying it. Of course, he’s had it mobile games of Marvel Snap and Pokémon Go, but with the British weather over the holidays, the play time has swung heavily in Marvel’s favour this week.

Nick P finished up The Callisto Protocol and sadly found it to be rather average – “It felt very on rails and once you learn the enemy mechanics, they become a bit of a joke. Not one jump scare had me I was sad to say, as they kind of felt very obvious and repeated. Overall, a bit of a let down.” So he hopped over to Resident Evil 5 and continued a platinum run of the original Resident Evil HD.

It might not make sense on a surface level, but Tuffcub comes before Steve, playing Destiny 2 (of course), as well as Saints Row (rubbish), Ghostwire Tokyo (v. good), The Callisto Protocol (v. v. good).

And last up we have Steve, who brings things back around to Nobody Saves The World, which he’s been playing since it’s soon to be leaving Game Pass. He’s also hoping to catch up on Octopath Traveler before the sequel comes out, and balanced that with the barminess of Evil West – “I can kind of see why it got some criticism from those who were expecting a full modern AAA style game but it really scratches the 360 era itch that I didn’t realise I had.”

Now then, what have you played this past week?
